Experiencing God in Zambia

Words cannot fully express the life-changing experience I had on my first mission trip to Zambia, Africa. They say a picture is worth a thousand words, so I decided to trump that by creating a video. I absolutely LOVE the people of Zambia because they reminded me of what matters the most in this world–family, community, love for one another, a grateful heart and a sincere heart of worship. Our team of missionaries went there to change the lives of the Zambian people, not realizing that we would be the ones who would never be the same. Despite the numerous challenges and obstacles in their way, everyone we encountered still found a way to smile throughout their day. Despite the dearth of the conveniences many of us take for granted like air conditioning, doors, indoor plumbing, and in some cases electricity, these people praised God with their whole hearts, for hours on end! When the electricity wasn’t available, they used their voices to create beautiful music for God. It encourages me even now that no matter what I may face from day to day, God is still on the throne, completely in control and totally worthy of my sincerest praise. Please take a moment to watch this video and vicariously experience this beautiful place through my camera lens.

In Everything…

Thanks

Be thankful for every situation, good or bad. God promises to work it all out for your good (Romans 8:28).

2015 has been an interesting year for me, filled with a lot of ups and downs, setbacks and successes… Through every experience, I tried my best to remain consistent in sharing my story with anyone who cared to read this blog. Many of my readers have shared what God said to them through my blog and the messages definitely varied from person to person. However, one theme rings true from every blog post that I’ve written. In everything, give thanks. Every message I wrote this year tells a simple story about God’s love, forgiveness, grace and direction for us. Through my transparency, I’ve been able to tell you personally how God has impacted even the smallest areas of my life and has given me something to be thankful for in every situation, good or bad.

Be thankful in all circumstances, for this is God’s will for you who belong to Christ Jesus.” 1 Thessalonians 5:18 NLT

Today, I could feel a lot of different ways about the last 365 days, but I am mostly grateful for 2015 because it has and is still making me a stronger person. I am even grateful for the many times I cried, felt alone and was afraid,  because those were the times when God’s presence was felt the most. My relationship is much stronger and now I am even more determined to live for Christ and to lead others to follow Him. I am grateful to every person who ever read my blog or shared a post. Your support has meant so much to me and has encouraged me to keep writing even when the devil told me I was wasting my time.

As I prepare for an exciting New Year, I ask that you would keep me in prayer. I know the Lord is shifting me and change is always scary. One of the shifts is in preparation for my first missions trip to Zambia, Africa in April 2016. Thanks to the support of my wonderful family and friends, I will be embarking on a journey to Ndola, Lusaka and Chingola to spread the Good News while providing clothing, food and fellowship to hundreds of men, women and children. I also plan to fully promote my fitness business, Conqueror Fit, on this website. Here is where you will get fitness tips, videos and workout tutorials. Stay tuned…

I look forward to a fruitful 2016 and I pray that God will bless you richly for many years to come

When Faith Contradicts

“Abraham said, my son, God will provide for Himself the lamb for a burnt offering.” Genesis 22: 8 NKJV

It seems like the more I strive to follow Christ and encourage others through my own testimony, the more obstacles Satan throws in my path to keep my mouth shut. This morning, I was jolted out of a much-needed sleep by the urge to write this message of hope to someone who may need it. Perhaps, I am the only person who actually needs to hear this, but I’ve learned in my devotions that when I am lacking and seeking God for something, the best thing I can do is give away the very thing I am seeking to someone else. So I am praying that I can pour hope into someone’s desperate situation with this message.

The story from which the above passage was taken is the word that woke me this morning because it spoke to the tremendous faith Abraham displayed during a moment of enormous pressure. For those who may not know, Abraham had already displayed his great faith in God more than once. Many years ago, God came to him and told him to literally pick up everything he had and relocate from his native land to a place God would eventually show him. God gave him no other instruction, yet Abraham was willing to leave everything he knew and found comfort in because God simply asked him to. Then God told him in his old age that he would be the father of many nations through a son that he would eventually name Isaac. His wife was barren, yet Abraham believed God for that miracle. After many, many years of waiting for that promise to manifest, God did exactly what He said. However, even after all of that testing, God felt the need to test Abraham once again. He told Abraham to take his only son to a mountain and sacrifice him on the altar. Abraham’s response still blows my mind to this day, because I know that I would have taken so long to obey that command. My first thought if I were Abraham would have been, ‘I know I didn’t hear God clearly because He promised me a son. He told me that I would father many nations, so He couldn’t possibly mean that I have to kill my only son…I’m just going to sit here and wait for another word from God because He clearly made a mistake.’ In doing so, Abraham would have failed the test miserably and would have forfeited the many unknown blessings God had in store for him in exchange for what he knew and was already comfortable with.

This story is important because our faith is the key that opens the door to any promise we are believing God for. God has heard your prayers and He wants to give you everything He has for you, but it’s critical for us to trust the process. Sometimes, the process can be painful. It can make you want to give up. It can make you question whether you are really acting in God’s will. It can make you wonder if God is truly sovereign or if He’s even listening. But faith is key. It’s our faith that moves God to act, not our questions. It still boggles my mind because I am not totally there yet, but Abraham’s response to his son is the same response we need to have in the desperate times in our lives.

“God will provide…”

Whether we are battling loneliness, strife in our relationships, suicidal thoughts, unfair treatment in the workplace, a troubled marriage, abandonment, financial issues, etc, we have to get to a place where we believe with our whole being that God will provide. But it doesn’t stop there. Like Abraham, we must move forward with what God has instructed us to do even when it hurts and makes absolutely no sense at all. When Abraham showed God once again that He could be trusted with His promise, God interrupted Abraham just as he was about to sacrifice his son and provided him with the ram in the bush to sacrifice instead. God’s intention was never for Isaac to be killed, but he needed Abraham to demonstrate his sole devotion to God above the very thing he always wanted—a son.

When we get to a point where we trust God even when it contradicts everything He’s promised, that is when the real breakthrough will come. I am literally preaching this to myself. More than anything, I want things to go a certain way, but things don’t always happen the way I want them to. So, I have to trust God with my life and believe that where I am going is where He is leading me. The wonderful thing about God is that He always corrects us when we are open to His correction and will place us on the right path whenever we get off track. The best promise He has given us is that no matter how bad things may be, all things truly do work together for our good (Romans 8:28). So I don’t know if that was for just me or for someone else, but I wanted to put this out there as a reminder to myself years or months from now when I am going through another test and I find myself questioning God. I will look back on this time and remember how God did and will always provide.

The Wile E. Coyote

“No weapon formed against you shall prosper…” Isaiah 54:17

roadrunner-590x330When I think about this scripture, I think about one of my favorite cartoon rivals as a child—the story of the “Road Runner vs. the Wile E. Coyote.” If you remember that cartoon, the Road Runner was always minding his business, doing what he’s supposed to do, but there was this relentless enemy who would not leave him alone no matter what. It seemed like it was his life’s work to destroy the Road Runner, so the  Road Runner had to constantly be on alert for his arch-enemy. The Wile E. Coyote was so crafty in the methods he chose, but it didn’t matter because nothing worked. In fact, every scheme he plotted led to his own humiliation. I find that scenario so interesting because I see that very clearly in the way that the enemy attacks us. As we strive to do what we are supposed to do as Christians, this enemy uses anything he can to destroy us. That’s where this scripture comes into play. There is no weapon that the devil can think of that will prosper against us. I came across an article written by TIME magazine called “The 9 Rules of Every Wile E. Coyote and Road Runner Cartoon,” and two of the rules really stuck with me. The first states that the Wile E. Coyote’s biggest threat is not the Road Runner, but is gravity. The same goes for our enemy, Satan. Satan is known as the “fallen angel,” so from his fallen state, he tries to accomplish his goal. No matter what he tries to do, his efforts have already failed before they get started, because he is already defeated (fallen). Read More

You Decide

choicesYou may recall some of the popular game shows from back in the day where the contestants would claim a prize by opting to see what was behind door numbers 1, 2 or 3. Those games were always exciting because the audience would be screaming out which door they believed would contain the brand-new car, while the contestant stood onstage nervously pondering their decision. It was truly a mind game because the contestant would have to decide whether they would listen to the screaming audience, their own reasoning, or the “advice” the game show host would offer. In very rare instances, the contestant would choose correctly and would walk away with that brand-new car or dream vacation, but in many more occasions, the “grand prize” ended up being something less desirable like a frying pan. Now, suppose you were on that same game show and you had to choose which door you would open. Whatever door you choose would have a major impact on your life going forward. Suddenly, the spotlight is on you and it’s time to make a decision. The crowd begins to scream out their opinion and your insides reel with anxiety because your next move is absolutely critical…but then suddenly, out of nowhere, the game show host interrupts the show and announces which door contains the prize you desire. Perhaps a bit skeptical, you consider the information for a second and decide to go with it, because you really have no idea what to do. To your amazement, the prize behind the door is exactly what the host said it would be and you leave the show feeling completely satisfied.

“…I have set before you life and death, the blessing and the curses; therefore choose life, that you and your descendants may live.” Deuteronomy 30:19

In this text, God is providing us with two options. Behind “Door #1” is life and blessings. Behind “Door #2” is death and curses. But instead of playing mind games and making it hard for us to decide which to choose, God tells us exactly what to do. He clearly says to choose life! But it’s up to us to decide whether or not we will listen to the screaming studio audience (other people, society), our own flesh (human reasoning, understanding and rationale) or choose God (the Lord of Hosts)…The spotlight is on us, and the decision is now ours to make.

Power Outage

no-battery-512“Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be acceptable in Your sight, O Lord, my strength and my redeemer.” Psalm 19:14 NLT

We used to recite that scripture at the end of choir rehearsal in college. I never really thought too much into what we were saying, until recently. I have been praying for guidance to make better decisions in my life and God has given me a deeper understanding of what that scripture means. Whether we knew it or not, our involvement in the choir made us ambassadors for Christ. There would be some people on campus who would never attend our concerts, but our lives should have remained a good representation of Christ everywhere where we went. I’m learning quickly that prayer alone isn’t enough, but I have to take responsibility for my actions. I understand now that my actions don’t always back up what I believe. My attitude doesn’t always complement what I write about. The words I speak don’t always demonstrate my faith or even my reverence for God. In many cases, I have failed to represent Christ the way I should. For the first time in my life, I am discovering that it is possible to be saved and not feel the presence of the Holy Spirit. The end result of this kind of lukewarm behavior is a Christian with no power..

Good for You

“I AM the True Vine, and My Father is the Vinedresser. Any branch in Me that does not bear fruit [that stops bearing] He cuts away (trims off, takes away); and He cleanses and repeatedly prunes every branch that continues to bear fruit, to make it bear more and richer and more excellent fruit.” John 15:1-2 AMP

Fruit TreeSometimes, we find ourselves in a difficult situation and we tend to think it’s because we are being punished for something. One reason for this rationale is that we are human, and with our human, worldly minds, we believe that only good things will happen to us if we always do what’s right. God called us to do what is right because it is good for us in the long run but that does not guarantee a lifetime free of hardship. Read More

Ammunition

Spiritual WarfareI may be one of the few people in the world who grew up watching horror films from birth. From vampires to werewolves to killer dolls, there wasn’t anything I couldn’t handle, lol. Before you stop reading this to look up the number for child protective services, hear me out! Something good did come out of it. One thing I found to be most interesting about these movies is that the monsters never died! It didn’t matter if the protagonist killed the enemy by fire, bullet, knife, sword or dynamite, the bad guy always reemerged bigger, badder and more terrifying than before.  Then as I was having my devotions one morning, it clicked. The problem is that they kept using the wrong weapons against their enemy. In every horror film, the “monster” is always driven by an evil force, so using the right weapon was critical to breaking the curse that brought the monster to life in the first place. In every case, the main character attempted to use the enemy’s own weapons against them, but that never worked. The monster would only be defeated when it was exposed to something that counteracted its very nature. The same thing happens when we deal with our issues, past and present.

Worth It

You thought I was worth saving, so You came and changed my life

You thought I was worth keeping, so You cleaned me up inside

You thought I was to die for, so You sacrificed Your life

So I can be free, so I can be whole, so I tell everyone I know…

This week, gospel recording group, Anthony Brown and Group Therapy, released a single called “Worth.” The song presents a beautiful, yet powerful message that in spite of all the mess we have done or are currently involved in, Jesus still thinks we were worth dying for. While this song, in all its beauty, is full of truth, I need to point out something not so apparent from the lyrics. Jesus thought we were worth dying for before we committed our first sin…before we got saved and accepted Him as Lord…before we “got our act together.” Our redemption was a part of the plan from the beginning of time, from the moment God decided to create us and give us free will. To make the point even clearer, I was led one day to read the story of Hosea in the Old Testament. Hosea isn’t one of the more “popular” books of the bible, but for me, it paints the clearest picture of what God really did than any other book in the Bible. Read More

The Truth About Spiritual Gifts

spiritual-gifts

Keep your attention on God’s call to an assignment rather than on your spiritual gifts, personal desires, skills, abilities, or resources. Once you understand God’s call to an assignment, obey Him, and He will work through you to accomplish His divine, eternal purposes. (excerpt from Experiencing God by Henry & Richard Blackaby)

Recently, I read a chapter in “Experiencing God” that changed the way I think about God’s will and my spiritual gifts. All these years, I thought that all I needed to do was find out what my spiritual gift is and then join a ministry that suits my natural inclinations. But, I learned that there is more to this thing. All throughout the Bible, there are examples where God had first called people and then qualified them to perform a certain task. By right, people like Moses, David, the prophets and the twelve disciples were all unqualified to participate in God’s plan; however, He empowered each of them with the Holy Spirit and gave them the ability to carry out every task. These people didn’t take a spiritual gifts test or anything. They simply made themselves available to the Lord and relied on Him to not only reveal His plan, but to instruct them every step of the way as they helped carry out that plan. Read More
